Washington Heights Gets Its First Curbside Electric Car Charger

The Upper Manhattan neighborhood recently got its first electric vehicle charger on Fort Washington between West 164th and 165th Streets.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — For the first time in its history, Washington Heights has its own publicly accessible electric vehicle charger.

The New York City Department of Transportation just installed a charger on Fort Washington Avenue between West 164th and 165th Streets — near the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The Curious Uptowner was the first publication to report on the new uptown electric vehicle charger.

There are three different levels for charging electric vehicles:

  • Level 1 Charge:
    • Up to 5 miles of range per hour of charging
    • Standard household outlet, Low voltage (120v)
  • Level 2 Charge:
    • Up to 20 miles of range per hour of charging
    • Mid-level voltage (240v), commonly used in large appliances like dryers
  • Level 3 Charge:
    • Over 30 miles of range per 10 minutes of charging
    • DC Fast Charging, the fastest charging option (over 480v)

However, the one in Washington Heights is a Level 2 that provides 20 miles of range.

The city has installed 80 chargers across the five boroughs, with a goal of 120 stations.
