Woman's Screams Alert Family To Attempted Uptown Rape, NYPD Says

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS-INWOOD, NY —The NYPD is trying to identify a suspect wanted in connection with an attempted rape that occurred in Upper Manhattan, police said.

The attempted rapist broke into an apartment on Wadsworth Avenue and West 189 Street around 5 a.m. Wednesday after the home's door was left ajar, police said. A 43-year-old woman who lives in the apartment went to investigate the door after she heard her dog barking, police said.

The man then grabbed the woman, threw her onto a bed and attempted to remove her clothes, police said. The woman's screams alerted family members who rushed to her aid. When the attacker was confronted by the woman's family he fled the scene, police said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation, but police could not specify if she was injured during the attack.

Police released photos of the suspect walking down a dark street. He is described as a man standing between 5-foot-8 and 6-feet who was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark pants and a grey hooded sweatshirt.
