2 West Village Joints Named Among Best Dive Bars In NYC

Dive bars are part of the fabric of New York City, and two West Village watering holes recently got mentioned among the best.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — The title of the best dive bar is almost an oxymoron, given that any legitimate dive bar would say they didn't want that type of attention.

However, the more low-key and affordable drinking spots are a crucial part of New York City's social scene.

Eater NY recently came out with a list of the 25 best dive bars in the five boroughs, and two West Village joints made the ranking.

"Very tiny and very divey, Johnny’s in the West Village is a time-capsule bar, otherwise surrounded by an ever-changing neighborhood. Fights have been spotted here on more than one occasion."

Eater's description of Johnny's isn't far off how the West Village bar describes itself, minus the fights.

"Johnny's bar is a dive in the heart of the West Village," reads a section on Johnny's Facebook. "Pick your own music on the jukebox and enjoy a cold one."

It is open from noon to 4 a.m. every day.

Julius': 159 West 10th Street

Here's what Eater NY had to say about Julius':

"The Stonewall Inn gets all the attention when it comes to NYC’s most historic gay bars, but Julius is even older and less of a tourist destination. Well drinks and beers are under $10, which is just one reason this narrow bar is often packed. The underrated burger, cooked on grill top across the wooden bar, is also very popular after a drink or two."

Incredibly, Julius' has operated as a bar since 1863. It was built in 1826 and first opened as a grocery store.

Julius' Bar was also the location of a famed 1966 "Sip-In," at which gay activists challenged New York State's prohibitions on gay bars.
