5 Best Village Bars to Kick Off the Football Season
With the NFL season getting underway on Thursday, it's time to find a bar to enjoy the whole football season.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — With the NFL season getting underway on Thursday, it's time to find a bar to enjoy the whole football season.
Patch took a look around for the five best bars in the West Village, Greenwich Village and East Village to enjoy the start of the most popular sport in the country.
1. Wogie's Bar and Grill — 39 Greenwich Avenue

The highlight of Wogie's, hardly a West Village secret at a decade old, is the buffalo wings. But they also have a menu full of disgusting creations — and we mean that in the most complimentary of ways. Garbage bread, fried mozzarella balls, chili fries and 17 different hoagies will fill you up and have you headed for the Tums. Advance warning though, this is a Philly bar, so expect to see the Eagles on TV every Sunday.
Nancy R. on Yelp says: "Wogies is my jam! Best wings (Krazy Kate's wings aka buffalo wings), so good that I've never ordered anything else. ... All of their sauces are made in house and you can really taste the difference! Great place to watch games too!"

2. Down the Hatch — 179 W. 4th St.
We like this place just for the name alone, but the Greenwich Village spot also got a great dive-y feel to it. They also have 11 TVs so you can take in all the football action each weekend. If you're going to pre-game for the season opener, they've got a half-price bar special every Thursday with $4 domestic bottles and $10 domestic pitchers until 8 p.m.
Shane P. on Yelp says: "Tons of TVs, so as you can imagine, place really bumps during football season (they play the broadcast audio loud and clear for Jets and GMEN, which is important)."
3. The Grayson — 16 First Avenue
Big, giant, enormous, huge TV screens. They are all set for the football season with maybe the best TV setup in all of Manhattan (let alone the East Village). You can grab a domestic pitcher for $15 or a PBR for just $4 and take in all the action on 45 (!) HDTVs.
Mala L. on Yelp says: "I'm a fan. We came to watch the NCAA tournament. The TV situation was great — large and small TVs *everywhere* so you'll have a good view wherever you sit. As it should be though — a good sports bar doesn't have a bad seat in the house. And they also showed the game with sound. Win and win."
4. Professor Thom's — 219 Second Avenue
This is for all you New England transplants living in New York. If you want to find the Jets or Giants games, you can go to just about any bar in the city. If you're looking for the Patriots, this is the only place in the city you should be. It's also a Michigan bar, so you really get the full Tom Brady experience going here. Oh, and the food — they have amazing nachos.
Peg Y. on Yelp says: "The atmosphere is a standard chill bar with an outdoor patio on the second floor. We stayed on the first level, where there is a TV inside every booth. It's as if you're drinking and eating in your living room!"
5. Reservoir Bar — 70 University Place
Close enough to Union Square to walk, but not close enough to bring in random tourists. Their burgers and sandwiches are all reasonably priced at $8.95 to $9.95 or you can just get an order of waffle fries for $5.95. They've got 13 beers on tap and 17 kinds of bottles. Plenty of TVs behind the bar and on the wall at the end of the bar.
Mitch E. on Yelp says: "The place has an old school charm that is rare in the city these days. Came in and there were tons of flat screens up on the walls."
