Blaze Rips Through West Village Penthouse
Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours before the flames were under control.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — Firefighters battled a blaze that ignited a West Village penthouse for nearly two hours before the flames were under control, said an FDNY spokesman.
The flames broke out Saturday night at about 8:45 p.m. when roofing material caught fire at 838 Greenwich Street near Gansevoort Street, officials said.

Crowds gathered on the street and nearby roofs to watch the flames sputter into the sky.

The fire started in an extension of a penthouse apartment, FDNY said. No injuries were reported.
