GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — These students have a can-do attitude.

On Friday, students from P.S. 41 Greenwich Village School donated over 10,000 cans of food to New Yorkers in need, as part of the annual City Harvest and New York Daily News food drive.

The food drive runs until Jan. 12, with the goal of collecting 700,000 pounds of food for needy New Yorkers.

And thanks to the K-5th grade kids, parents and staff at P.S. 41 who donated, sorted and packed food for the City Harvest pick up on Friday, the food drive is 10,593 cans closer to their goal.

"We are so grateful to P.S. 41 for their remarkable contribution to this year's Daily News Food Drive," said Ellen Granger, City Harvest's senior manager of donor relations and supply chain. "City Harvest began with a very simple premise–neighbors helping neighbors. And now, more than 40 years later, that principle still guides us. It is so inspiring to see the next generation of New Yorkers step up to help their neighbors in need."

Demand at food pantries and soup kitchens is rising, with average monthly visits up 65 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels in New York City, according to City Harvest.

An October report from Gothamist called the rise in demand for food assistance a "perfect storm" of inflation, the end of pandemic-era food assistance and unprecedented delays from the Adams administration in processing public assistance benefits, like SNAP.

P.S. 41 isn't new to pitching in — the students there have been helping donate to the Daily News Food drive since 2006, and, according to City Harvest, is typically the school with most donations each year.

Last year, the school donated more than 8,000 pounds of food.
