West Village Crime Stats Plummet, NYPD Data Show
Reported crime in August dropped about 23 percent from numbers in August 2022, continuing a trend seen in July, police data show.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — The West Village saw crime numbers drop south more than 20 percent for the second month in a row this summer, outpacing citywide averages, newly released NYPD Data show.
Major crime stats dropped in the West Village's 6th Precinct by roughly 23 percent in August compared to the same month in 2022, according to the data.
That's on par with the 25 percent drop the precinct witnessed in July, giving hints that falling crime numbers might be part of a trend.

The 6th Precinct is even outpacing the citywide decline in crime numbers — major crimes fell 2.47 percent in August — stats that NYPD Police Commissioner Edward Caban was quick to tout Wednesday.
“New York City is the safest big city in the nation,” Caban said “We will continue to drive overall crime even lower. This is happening at a time when historically crime often spikes.”

The biggest drop in reported West Village crime was found in burglary, which saw a massive decline of 70 percent in August with only 12 reported crimes — a big change from the 40 reported in August last year.
Felony assault also saw a nearly 57 percent drop, with 17 fewer reported incidents, and a 48 percent drop in robberies.
Transit crimes and misdemeanor assault were also down by 33 percent and nearly 23 percent respectively over last August.
But not every crime statistic dropped.
Car thefts, a problem cited by Caban as a citywide issue, were up the highest statistically, at 14.3 percent, but numerically that translated to only one more theft in August compared to last year.
Grand larceny, or thefts over $1,000, saw eight more reported incidents over last year, an increase of almost eight percent.
Year-to-date, major crime numbers are down by over -12 percent on average, with only felony assaults seeing an overall increase, at 11.
Compared to two years ago, crime is still up so far this year by over 60 percent.
In 2022, crime was 8.3 percent higher compared to 2001 numbers.
Despite the uptick, crime numbers last year were still -22 percent lower than 1998 statistics.
