QUOGUE, NY — A deceased dolphin was found on a Quogue beach Tuesday morning, police said.

According to Quogue Village Police Chief Christopher Isola, at about 8:45 a.m., police received a call about a dolphin in distress on a Dune Road beach.

Police responded with the Southampton Town Police Department's marine bureau; upon arrival, police found that the dolphin was deceased, authorities said.

The New York Marine Rescue Center was notified and responded to perform a necropsy on the dolphin, which was slated for burial on Tuesday, police said.

According to Robert DiGiovanni, executive director and chief scientist with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society: "The animal was a 7-foot, 2-inch female common dolphin. The animal was called in initially alive to the NYMRC and before they arrived, the animal died — so our team, AMSEAS, collected the animal to conduct a necropsy. The necropsy examination is ongoing," he said.
