Driver Charged With DWI After Hampton Bays Crash: Police

He was arrested Monday night after crashing into a tree, police say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash in Hampton Bays Monday night, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the single-car crash took place at 7:19 p.m. in the area of Ponquogue Avenue near Faith Drive. Upon arrival, officers found that a driver had collided with a tree and then left the scene, police said.

The vehicle was located nearby and after an investigation, the driver, Erik D. Lopez Ochoa, 26, of Hampton Bays was found; it was determined that he'd been driving while intoxicated, police said.

He was arrested at the scene and then taken to Southampton Town police headquarters for processing, police said. Lopez Ochoa was charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor, and several traffic violations, police said.

He was held overnight for morning arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court; no injuries were reported, police said.
