HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Hampton Bays High School athletes opened their heart recently in a big way, giving back to those battling cancer.

The Hampton Bays girls varsity tennis team rallied to support Lucia’s Angels, an East End organization that provides care and assistance to women in the final stages of breast, ovarian and cervical cancer.

To raise awareness, the Lady Baymen wore pink and highlighted their cause during two varsity matches against East Hampton and Mattituck. The team will also be donating $300 to Lucia’s Angels in support of the group’s vital mission, the district said.

According to the Lucia's Angels website: "The foundation was created in loving memory of Lucia Terzi Bagan. Lucia was a very giving person — not only in the material sense but also of herself and her heart. It's no wonder she had so many friends and family surrounding her in her final days. It was Lucia's wish that other women and their families could have that same kind of love and support through their toughest times."

Lucia’s Angels, the site added, has provided help and funding for gasoline gift cards, grocery gift cards, heating bills, dental work, housecleaning, rent, eyeglasses, food trains, babysitting, heating bills, health insurance premiums, automobile repair, ambulatory trips, therapeutic massage, transportation, salon services and wigs.

"From special wishes like one more trip to the beach, to providing extra child-care, to the holding of a hand, Lucia's spirit and Angels will be there," the site said.
