Man Charged With DWI After Crashing Into 2 Trees: Police

The Riverhead man was arrested Friday night in Westhampton, police say.

WESTHAMPTON, NY — A Riverhead man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he drove off the road and hit two trees Friday night, police said.

Alejandro Coyago-Jimenez, 26, was arrested at 10:49 p.m. after a police officer on Sunrise Highway in Westhampton saw him heading westbound in a "reckless" manner and failing to maintain his lane, Southampton Town police said. He was seen crossing from the shoulder of the road into the grassy median in the center of the highway and then back into the travel portion of the road while traveling at speeds as low as 25 miles an hour and then accelerating rapidly back to 55 miles an hour, police said.

When the officer initiated a traffic stop, Coyago-Jimenez drove off the right shoulder of the roadway and hit the two trees, police said. He was arrested and charged with DWI; operating a vehicle with .08 percent or more BAC; and reckless driving, all misdemeanors, as well as several other traffic infractions, police said.

He was brought to Southampton Town police headquarters, where he was processed and held for arraignment, police said.
