Man Hits Traffic Sign, Keeps Driving, Charged With DWI: Police

He was arrested Saturday, police say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A man who crashed into a traffic sign and kept driving was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated Saturday, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the crash took place at about 12:16 a.m. in the vicinity of Flanders Road and Bellows Pond Road in Hampton Bays. Passing motorists reported that a vehicle, headed south on Flanders Road, left the travel portion of the roadway, struck a traffic sign, and proceeded south on Flanders Road, police said.

Daniel S. Paute-Quichimbo, 41, of Middle Island, struck a "no parking" sign, causing damage to the sign and the front end of his vehicle, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.

Paute-Quichimbo was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor, and numerous traffic infractions; he was transported to Southampton Town police headquarters where he was processed and held for morning arraignment, police said.
