Man Reportedly Brandishing Handgun Leads To Hampton Bays Standoff: PD

Crisis negotiators were called to the scene of the Hampton Bays home during the tense, 3-hour standoff, police said.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A Hampton Bays resident was arrested after reportedly brandishing a handgun and menacing a man in a situation that led to a three-hour standoff, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at 8:09 p.m. inside a residence on Springville Road in Hampton Bays when a call came in about someone with a handgun.

Southampton Town Police Department patrol officers and members of the STPD community response unit responded to the scene and located a male resident of the home who told officers that Anyelo Mareclo Barenfaller, 41, physically menaced him, police said.

Crisis negotiators responded, along with members of the STPD emergency services unit, detective division, and a Southampton Village Police Department K9 unit, police said.

After about three hours, Barenfaller exited the residence and was taken into custody, where he was subsequently charged with third-degree menacing, a misdemeanor, police said.

No firearm was recovered, police said.

Barenfaller was transported to Southampton Town police headquarters for processing and held for arraignment, police said.
