LIRR Resumes Full Service To Grand Central Terminal After Fire: Officials

LONG ISLAND, NY — Update: The Long Island Rail Road has resumed full service to and from Grand Central Madison starting at 2:41 p.m. after a morning fire at a traction power substation, according to NYC Emergency Management on X.

"Power was removed to allow firefighters to safely access the tracks. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the LIRR fire marshal," the statement said.

The first eastbound train to depart Grand Central Madison was Train #754 to Hempstead at 2:41 p.m., followed by normal p.m. peak service. The first westbound train to arrive was Train #755, departing Jamaica at 2:34 p.m. and arriving at Grand Central Madison at 2:53 p.m., officials said.

Original story: A fire at Grand Central Terminal sparked "widespread disruptions" across the Long Island Rail Road, officials said Tuesday morning.

According to NYC Emergency Management on X: "A two-alarm fire broke out at Grand Central Terminal this morning. FDNY operations are ongoing, and the incident remains active. The fire and smoke has caused widespread disruptions across the Long Island Rail Road and related transit systems."

All LIRR service to and from Grand Central Madison was suspended due to the fire and smoke. On the Far Rockaway Branch: Grand Central-bound trains were diverted to Atlantic Terminal. Passengers should expect significant reroutes and cancellations, officials said. On the Babylon branch, reroutes and cancellations occurred due to the ongoing emergency response.

On the Port Washington branch, service to Grand Central was suspended, with trains not operating between Port Washington and Grand Central.

For westbound LIRR trains, some were canceled upon arrival in Jamaica or diverted to Penn Station or Atlantic Terminal, officials said.

NYC Emergency Management and FDNY remained on site during the fire, and ventilation fans were in operation to clear smoke, officials said.
