Rainfall Sparks Significant Erosion, Sunrise Highway Concerns In Hampton Bays: Police
As repairs remain underway, the westbound lane of the Sunrise Highway will be restricted to a single lane of traffic, officials say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Thursday's heavy rainfall caused significant erosion concerns for Sunrise Highway in the area of the Shinnecock Canal, police said.
Southampton Town officials said that the Shinnecock Canal bridge on Sunrise Highway will remain under construction until further notice due to damage sustained during the storm.
"During this period, the westbound lane will be restricted to a single lane of traffic," town officials said.

According to Southampton Town police, the New York State Department of Transportation is currently on scene investigating and planning for the emergency repair/remediation of the area.
The reduced capacity of Sunrise Highway westbound is expected to remain a concern for the immediate future "but the state is working as quickly as possible to address the issue," police said.

Drivers are encouraged to possibly stagger the timing of westbound travel or consider alternate routes/travel plans to reduce significant delays, police said.
"Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and increased traffic congestion in the area. Please plan accordingly and allow additional travel time," town officials said. "The Town of Southampton appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as repairs are completed to ensure the safety of all travelers."
Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore also declared a state of emergency due to the damage from the storm.
