5 Things You Can't Do In West Islip

A tongue-and-cheek look at some of the challenges and things missing from the hamlet.

Each weekday, West Islip Patch highlights five things to do in the hamlet. However, putting tongue firmly in cheek, and with some truth sprinkled in, today we’re playing off the Twitter trending topic #5thingsyoucantdo and listing, well, five things you can’t do in West Islip. These are in no particular order.

Not play lacrosse. Yes, it’s a double negative, but lacrosse over the past decade has become the sport to play for youngsters throughout the hamlet. Four state championships will do that. Drive through West Islip in the spring and you’ll see a bevy of lacrosse cages on the front laws of homes. We’ve even heard of kids quitting baseball to focus on lacrosse in the spring. Okay all you baseball purists; take a breath.

Drive quickly north on Higbie Lane/Udall Road from Montauk Highway to Sunrise Highway. This is especially true during weekdays during school. First the high school lets out! And then traffic from St. John The Baptist! And the nursing staff at lets out at 3 p.m!! Oh no…now the Long Island Rail Road crossing is down!!!!! I’ve been stuck in front of for 20 minutes!!!!! (Insert screams and swearing here) And I'm sure  it's happened to you.

Meet friends or co-workers at a local coffee shop. The Patch crew meets often at the Babylon Bean Coffee Extreme in Babylon Village, and many familiar faces from West Islip are seen across the town line to have a cup of coffee and surf the Internet. Too bad there isn’t such a place in West Islip. Maybe we could all meet at the proposed new laundromat where the vacant Blockbuster now stands. Although, seeing the delicates of co-workers is not high on our bucket lists.

Get sushi anywhere besides .  America was built on competition. But when it comes to eating sushi in West Islip, there isn't any. Then again, we're not sure there is a need for another raw fish joint with Kotobuki less than two miles away.

Find a fresher loaf of bread to make a sandwich with than at .  I'm not sure what goes into the baking process; whether they mix angel's hair, unicorn horns, robes of the Dalai Lama, but whatever they do, it's that good. Find a tastier loaf and I'll make a 7-10 split three times in a row.
