Community Celebrates West Islip's Graduation

Family and friends cheered on the Class of 2012 at Saturday's commencement ceremony.

West Islip pride marched onto the high school track, sporting blue and white caps and gowns and smiles during the school's graduation ceremony Saturday.

Beneath a sunny sky, the Class of 2012 listened to farewell speeches given by and .

Oszkinis and Metodiev, who will both be attending Harvard University in the fall, encouraged their classmates to aim high for their futures.

"Break away from the flock and fly on your own," said Oszkinis. "Leave your mark, not a stain, on the world," she said, echoing a quote a teacher wrote in her yearbook.

"Never let anything stop inspiring you," said Metodiev. "If you're willing to keep an open mind, there's nothing that can stop you."

Superintendent Richard Simon commended the 468 graduates and gave an inspirational speech, referencing legendary Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey as an example of perserverance against the odds.

"Let your passion and dreams in life guide your purpose, no matter what obstacles," he said.
