Fire Damages Home On Jackson Ave.

A home at 2024 Jackson Ave. was damaged in a fire that broke out just after noon on Sunday sending two people to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, including one fire fighter.

Scott Harvey, chief of the , said a part of the home was already “engaged” when fire fighters arrived on scene.

“At this point we’re not sure where the fire started or what started the fire,” Harvey told Patch from the scene.

He said one person in the home, believed to be a tenant, was removed from the house and sent to the hospital for difficulty breathing. A member of the West Islip Fire Department was also sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

Sid Johnsen, who lives next door to the home at 2024 Jackson Ave., said he could see flames shooting out of the back of the house.
“The fire appeared to be in the middle of the house,” he told Patch.

Although his home is located just to the east of the house damaged in the fire, Johnsen said he was not concerned about the fire spreading to his property.

“With the fire in the middle of the house and the wind blowing north, I was not too worried,” he said.

For the second consecutive Sunday, West Islip fire fighters were forced to battle a house fire in the July heat. A home at . was damaged on July 10. In that fire, three fire fighters were sent to the hospital suffering from heat exhaustion.

As with the fire on Bay Third St., Harvey could be heard rotating teams in and out of the fire on Jackson Ave. to provide them with relief from the heat.
