Mom: Son Saved Us From House Fire

Nine-year-old calls 911 after house went ablaze.

How many 9-year-olds would’ve done the same thing as Max Bakalo?

This past Saturday morning, a fire broke out in the boiler room of the Bakalo home on Pease Lane and it was Max who came to the rescue of his family.

“As I was on fire, he got his 5-year-old twin brothers out of the house safely and ran to our neighbors for them to call 911,” his mother Linda said. "The house is toast and can be replaced but we are all alive and okay.”

And to think, this wasn’t even the first time Max--who is a first-year Webelo with Pack 83 and youth athlete--acted quickly and came to the aid of his mother.  About four years ago, Linda’s lung unexpectedly collapsed, and with no one around, it was Max who acted fast.

“He called 911 and saved my life and took care of his then 1-year-old brothers until help came,” Linda said.  “He really is an amazing kid!”

Linda said that her home suffered extensive damage from the blaze, but was much more concerned that everyone made it out safely.

“Thankfully everyone is fine, that's what matters most,” she said.  "It’s a real mess to contend with, but so grateful for my son, neighbors and all the fire department, police and EMT's who responded so quickly.”
