Police Offering Tips to Keep Deliverymen Safe

Drivers can avoid being crime victims with some simple ideas.

Suffolk County police commissioner Edward Webber has safety tips for deliverymen and their companies who could be targeted by thieves for money or goods during the holiday season.

The police said it’s also important for people to be educated and knowledgable on how to protect themselves when a crime takes place. Robberies of fast food delivery people are on pace to be down in 2015, with 15 through the first 11 months of the year compared to 20 for all of 2014. Because delivery drivers may find themselves vulnerable, the department offers some suggestions:

• Ask for a callback number for customer, and verify the number before delivery.

If you are a victim of a crime, remember the following tips:

• Remain calm and follow the aggressor’s instructions.

It is critical for delivery drivers to follow their instincts, the police said. If you don’t feel safe, then call for assistance.
