UPDATE: 2 NYPD Officers Shot in the Bronx; Suspect Dead

Both officers were listed in stable condition after the Thursday-night shooting.

THE BRONX, NY — Two NYPD officers were shot around 8 p.m. Thursday inside the Melrose Houses, a public-housing complex located at 320 East 156th St. in the Bronx, according to the NYPD.

The officers, both two-year rookies on the force, were conducting a routine “vertical patrol” in a Melrose stairwell when they ran into two men, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Ben Tucker said at an evening press conference.

One of these men shot at the officers, then fled into a seventh-floor apartment, police said — where he was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gun wound.

A .32 caliber semi-automatic pistol and a shotgun recovered at the scene, police said.

Late Thursday evening, NYPD detectives were in the process of obtaining a warrant to search the rest of the apartment.

Both officers were transported to nearby Lincoln Hospital in stable condition , according to the NYPD. Both are expected to survive.

Four individuals are now being questioned in connection to the shooting, police said: the man who accompanied the shooter, and three residents of the apartment where the shooter fled.

“Our brave officers were doing their job tonight in our public housing… when they confronted an armed assailant,” NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio said at the press conference.

“Thank God, so far in both cases, their condition is good,” he added.

De Blasio had just finished giving his State of the City address a few miles away when the NYPD officers were shot, and reportedly had to be rushed out of the venue.
