Fire Tears Through Williamsburg Building On Metropolitan Ave

"The firemen are here, but we don't know what's happening yet," said an employee of a restaurant in the building.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — A fire was reported to the FDNY at around 4:44 p.m. on Monday afternoon at 374 Metropolitan Ave. near Marcy Avenue in Williamsburg, a spokesperson for the FDNY told Patch. The spokesperson did not know whether the fire was under control as of 5 p.m. There were 10 trucks and 75 officers on the scene, the spokesperson said.

An employee at La Bella Mariella Pizza II told Patch over the phone that he didn't know what was on fire. "The firemen are here, but we don't know what's happening yet," he said. They were still taking pizza orders, he said.

An employee from Siam Orchid thai restaurant next door said the third floor of 374 Metropolitan Ave. was on fire, and the first and second floors appeared to be affected too. "All the smoke is rushing to our building," he said. "We're just waiting for the fire department to put out the fire."

"It's definitely pretty serious," an employee from Milk Bar, another neighboring business, told Patch. That witness said he hadn't yet seen anyone evacuated from the building.

"It's pretty smokey coming out of all three floors," said an employee from Saltie, a sandwich shop next to 374 Metropolitan Ave.

Requests for comment from other neighboring businesses were not immediately returned.
