WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — A “rail condition” at the Halsey Street subway station in Bushwick early Wednesday evening caused a rush-hour pile-up of L Trains that packed subway platforms in Manhattan to max capacity, passengers reported on Twitter.

The backup began around 5:30 p.m., according to DNAinfo.

By 7 p.m., the problem at Halsey still hadn’t been fixed, according to the MTA.

Photos snapped at the Union Square and 14th Street subway stations in Manhattan showed crowds squeezed in tight and spilling back up the stairs. (See below.)

News leaked last week that the MTA was considering shutting down L Train service between Brooklyn and Manhattan as early as next year to finish Hurricane Sandy repair work, throwing the working people of Williamsburg into a state of commuter panic.
