Bill Naming Part Of Road After Lieutenant Sgroi Passes Legislature
Sgroi died of a sudden illness at the age of 37.
YORKTOWN, NY — A bill has passed the New York State Legislature that will, if signed by the governor, name a portion of a road in the town of Yorktown for a police lieutenant who died earlier this year.
State Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblyman Matt Slater announced Monday that their bills — S5541 and A3288 — passed both bodies.
The bill called for naming part of Crompond Road, or Route 202, between Elizabeth and Baldwin roads in Yorktown as the “Captain Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway.”

Slater called Sgroi an exemplary officer with a strong sense of dedication toward his community.
“Yorktown lost one of its finest members the day he passed,” he said, “and it is important we remember the selfless commitment he made to protect and serve.”
Harckham said Sgroi’s work in Yorktown benefited the entire community.
“Our law enforcement professionals rarely get the recognition and praise they deserve,” he said, “but with this bill, we intend to honor his memory, his kindness and his tremendous service.”
As a patrol officer with the Yorktown Police Department, Sgroi was the first-place recipient of the Stop DWI Award for the town of Yorktown in 2010 and 2012. In 2013, he received a certificate of commendation for his excellent work with the department, and he also became a certified field training officer and a desk officer.
In 2016, Sgroi was promoted to the rank of sergeant and was assigned a patrol squad to supervise as a patrol supervisor. Additionally, Sgroi managed the department’s Field Training Program, and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in July 2022, where he was assigned as the staff division commander.
