Restaurant Shutters After 16 Years In Mohegan Lake
A new eatery is slated to open at the same location.

MOHEGAN LAKE, NY — A longtime local restaurant, Augie’s Prime Italian Steakhouse, has closed after 16 years in business.
The eatery, which had been at 3436 Lexington Ave., announced the closure on its website.
A husband and wife team, Sal Barone and Audrey Hochroth, owned and operated the restaurant.

“Closing our doors is bittersweet, but more than anything, we’re grateful—for every meal shared, every laugh exchanged, and every person who made Augie’s what it was,” the owners said, in the announcement.
They originally launched the restaurant in the middle of a stock market crash.

According to the couple, they had wanted to create a space for the neighborhood to gather, and the restaurant became a “home away from home.”
The business has hosted events, such as Lobsterfests, Prime Rib nights, Augie’s Idol and Jeep giveaways. It has supported charitable organizations, such as Autism Speaks and Community Based Services.
“We’ve watched our team grow, made lifelong friends, and shared in moments big and small,” the owners said. “Even through COVID, we found ways to stay together, fueled by the energy of the community.”
Another restaurant is slated to open in the same space, according to the couple.
“We’re glad the building will continue to serve the neighborhood as a great new spot,” the owners said.
Details on the new eatery haven’t been announced yet.
