Utility Workers: Murphy a "True Son of Labor"

Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2 backs Senator Terrence Murphy.

JEFFERSON VALLEY, NY - State Senator Terrence Murphy scored the third large endorsement of the 2016 race for the 40th Senate District after learning he was endorsed by the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 1-2 AFL-CIO. UWUA Local 1-2 represents tens of thousands of members working in the electric, gas, water, and nuclear industries in the New York area.

Senator Murphy's father, Jack Murphy, was a long-time member of Local 1-2. In its endorsement, UWUA noted that Jack Murphy "spent more than 50 years as a Member of Local 1-2 serving his country and community with selfless dedication."
James T. Slevin, president of Local 1-2, said that "As a true son of labor ... we know that [Senator Murphy] understands at a deep level what the men and women of Local 1-2 do every day to keep the lights on and power flowing."

The Murphy campaign has already been scoring major endorsements early in the campaign season, and holds the backing of the New York State AFL-CIO and the New York State Nurse's Association. Senator Murphy has been a strong advocate for utility workers in the legislature and voted to help pass the Utility Worker Assault Bill into law, which makes assault against a Utility Worker a Class D felony.

"Every day, utility workers are front line first responders whether just doing their job or whenever disaster strikes, man-made or otherwise," Senator Murphy said. "They face the same dangers as other first responders and even more-so when working with electricity to get our power back on after a minor outage or a major event like Hurricane Sandy. I will do everything in my power to make sure they can continue their vital mission with the proper workplace safety measures in place, while continuing to work to expand employment and training opportunities for all workers."

"Senator Murphy's "commitment to the environment is one that we share as well," Slevin said. "We are confident that [he] will continue to look out for the best interests of our members in helping build a stronger middle-class across New York State."
