Yorktown Man Accused of 'Reckless' Driving, Swerving Into Opposite Traffic Lane

A 21-year-old Yorktown man is accused of "reckless" driving, swerving into the opposite lane, failing to yield to pedestrians as well as a number of other traffic violations, said.
Matthew L. Hernandez was charged with reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and the following vehicle and traffic law violations – unsafe start, fail to keep right, modified muffler, inadequate mirror, stop sign violation, fail to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk, open container of alcoholic beverage.
According to police on June 22 at approximately 7:40 p.m. the defendant was seen to be traveling in an "erratic manner" east bound on Commerce Street. The vehicle allegedly swerved into the opposite lane of travel and failed to yield the right of way to pedestrians in a cross walk before traveling through a posted stop sign, police said.

Hernandez's vehicle was stopped on Hanover Street and police revealed he also allegedly had an open container of an alcoholic beverage inside his vehicle.
The defendant was arrested at the scene and transported to police headquarters. He was issued traffic summons and released on $200 bail. The defendant was scheduled to appear in court on July 24.
