Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps Receives Generous Donation for New Ambulance

The Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a not-for-profit, basic life support provider, which has been providing emergency medical services to Yorktown since 1963, has received first aid of its own – a generous donation for a new ambulance. 

The Gilbert Beaver Conference Farm, Inc. has donated $195,000 to the all-volunteer organization. The money was used to replace a 10-year-old ambulance for a brand new one. 

"It helps us give back to the community," said Judy Ciacci, an 11-year member of the organization and First Lieutenant. "It's a life-saving gift. It's a huge support to our organization and the community."

Rich Cariello, captain and member of the organization for 39 years, said they were getting ready to buy a new ambulance when they found out about the donation. The money they had raised; however, would go toward replacing the next two ambulances when their time comes in 3 and 5 years.

YVAC is an independent organization with its own building on Loretta Street and three ambulances. Since it's not funded by the town or taxes, it solely relies on donations – which are always welcome. 

YVAC offers a number of services to Yorktown residents. The loan closet includes canes, walkers, crutches and wheelchairs that can be borrowed by those in need. They also hold a blood bank twice or three times a year when people can donate blood. They also respond to 911 service calls in the same area as the Yorktown Heights Fire Department, which covers 30 square miles. 

Volunteers are always needed, members said. 

"It's ordinary people doing extraordinary things," Ciacci said. "Everyone works meticulously together to save lives."

High school students could also get involved and volunteer. The Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Youth Group serves as an auxiliary to the Corps. Those 14-18 year old students are trained in CPR, First Aid, with some as New York State Certified First Responders.
