📰 News we're reading

• Mom killed in Fayetteville fire was expecting 2nd child; baby daughter fights for life at Chapel Hill hospital: Family friends (cbs17.com) — A young Fayetteville mother died after firefighters pulled her and her one-year-old daughter from a burning apartment on Kensington Court off Yadkin Road, and investigators are still searching for the cause. Loved ones say she was pregnant with her second child, while her baby remains in critical condition at UNC Chapel Hill as the community rallies and waits for answers.

• Rail Yard Dawgs close 2025 with home win over Marksmen (wsls.com) — Fayetteville hockey fans saw the Marksmen fall 5–2 on the road to the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs, who extended their head-to-head win streak to six. Despite two goals from Sam Dabrowski and a third-period push, penalties and missed power plays kept Fayetteville from closing the gap.

• NC air is getting better even as environmental oversight shrinks (fayobserver.com) — North Carolina’s air quality is the cleanest it’s been in decades, but environmental advocates warn that low-lying communities like Fayetteville still face pollution risks from upstream factory farms and shrinking regulatory oversight. State data show major drops in key pollutants even as population and the economy grow, yet watchdogs say cuts to environmental staffing could leave downstream residents more vulnerable.
