📰 News we're reading

1. Cumberland County proposes temporary solution for Gillespie Street lot (fayobserver.com) — Cumberland County leaders are eyeing a temporary green space for the former Gillespie Street parking lot downtown while they sort out long-term plans and lost parking near the courthouse. At the same time, commissioners may launch a master plan for the Crown Complex and nearby Fayetteville Regional Airport area, shaping future development, entertainment options, and possibly an aquatics center for local residents.

2. $1B Fayetteville Outer Loop finally opens in North Carolina (equipmentworld.com) — Fayetteville drivers now have a fully open I-295 Outer Loop, as NCDOT has finished the final five-mile segment between U.S. 401 and Camden Road months ahead of schedule. The $1 billion, 39-mile beltway is expected to ease congestion on local streets, better connect major routes around the city, and support future economic growth and industry recruitment.

3. Councilwoman Brenda McNair's Former Opponent Files Ethics Complaint (cityviewnc.com) — Fayetteville residents in District 7 may see renewed scrutiny of Councilwoman Brenda McNair after former opponent and activist Kathy Greggs filed an ethics complaint over her campaign conduct. The city’s Ethics Commission met in closed session about the allegations and will hold another special meeting, continuing a pattern of opaque proceedings that has drawn criticism as all prior complaints since 2020 have been dismissed.

4. Fayetteville to receive $18M after judge orders FEMA to restore funding (abc11.com) — Fayetteville is set to receive about $18 million in restored FEMA disaster-mitigation funding, backing long-planned work on stream banks and four key bridges, including along Russell and Person streets. City leaders say the money will reduce flooding, protect downtown neighborhoods, and support earlier local investments, after a federal judge reversed the Trump-era decision that pulled the funds.

5. Harnett County deputy accused of posing as veteran to get discount: Arrest warrant (abc11.com) — A Harnett County deputy is accused of using another woman’s identity to claim a military discount at Buckle in Fayetteville’s Cross Creek Mall, leading to two felony charges. The deputy, now on paid administrative leave, was arrested Friday and is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County District Court on Dec. 23.
