📰 News we're reading

• How Thom Tillis and allies maneuvered past 137 years of obstacles to aid Lumbee Tribe (courant.com) — A long-running federal fight over recognizing the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has finally cleared the U.S. Senate, with key help from several North Carolina lawmakers. The effort follows earlier attempts by the late Sen. Kay Hagan of Greensboro and could bring new federal benefits in health care, education, and economic development to Lumbee members across the state.

• North Carolina DEQ Approves Water, Air Permits for SSEP (cleantechnica.com) — Greensboro is among several local governments that opposed a newly approved natural gas pipeline project, but state regulators have still granted key water and air permits. The Southeast Supply Enhancement Project would cross sensitive watersheds that help supply drinking water and recreation for more than a million North Carolinians, prompting strong criticism from environmental groups and community advocates who vow to keep fighting it.
