Iredell Man Shot, Charged After Firing AR-15 In Two-Hour Standoff

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — An Iredell County man was arrested and charged following a two-hour standoff with authorities that ended when he was shot after firing several rounds at deputies from a semi-automatic rifle. He then later assaulted a medic administering first aid, Iredell County Sheriff's Office said.

According to an account by the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home on Trivette Road in Union Grove after a family member requested a welfare check for David Allan Nagy.

When deputies arrived, however, Nagy pulled a pistol and "told them he was going to kill them," ICSO said. "He then immediately retreated into the home and barricaded himself."

Deputies established a perimeter around the home and negotiators were brought in an attempt to encourage Nagy to surrender.

After a two-hour standoff, deputies shot tear gar into the home.

"Nagy came out of the rear of the home armed with an AR-15 style weapon pointing it at
Deputies," and fired numerous rounds at deputies, ICSO said.

At that point, an Iredell County Sheriff's Emergency Response Team officer shot Nagy.

"Deputies quickly advanced on Nagy, securing the rifle he had, and then immediately providing
First Aid even as Nagy continued to resist arrest," ICSO said.

Nagy was taken to a medical facility for treatment for his injury and was later transported to the Iredell County Detention Center once he was released from medical care. He was charged with felony assault with a firearm on a governmental official and misdemeanor communicating threats, and his secured bond was set at $200,000. ICSO said an investigation into the incident remained ongoing and that additional charges were anticipated.

Per protocol, the incident is also under investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. ICSO has also launched an internal investigation into the officer shooting and the deputy who shot Nagy was placed on administrative leave per ICSO policy, the agency said.
