MOORESVILLE, NC — Mooresville motorists will soon see new signage around town that aims to enhance cyclist safety, the town said Thursday.

Installation of the "Bicyclists May Use Full Lane" signs, which were approved by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, began Thursday.

The sign campaign aim to clarify rights of cyclists. Earlier this year, a 64-year-old cyclist was hit and killed on Hwy 115 when a car attempted to pass him.

"The request for the change in signs came from Scott McConnell, Vice President of the SAFE Committee, during a Town Board meeting on March 2," the town said in a statement. "At the meeting, McConnell requested that the Town install signed that read 'Bicyclists May Use Full Lane,' which provide a clearer safety message to both cyclists and drivers about the rights of cyclists compared to the previously posted 'Share The Road' signs."
