Raleigh night cap: New nighttime noise limits for local businesses now in place (wral.com) — New nighttime noise limits are now in effect across Raleigh, tightening how loud bars and restaurants can be and when they must turn down the volume, with special rules for Glenwood South. Businesses get two warnings before a $1,500 fine and possible outdoor-speaker bans, while residents can file complaints through the Ask Raleigh portal as police code staff check decibel levels.
   

2. Tom Bradshaw, Raleigh ‘boy mayor' who brought Beltline and helped downtown, has died (heraldsun.com) — Raleigh is mourning former mayor Tom Bradshaw, the onetime “boy mayor” who helped secure funding for the Beltline and pushed to revive downtown in the 1970s. Bradshaw, who later served as state transportation secretary and developed North Hills and North Ridge, died at 87. A memorial service will be held at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh on a date still to be announced.
   

3. Triangle hospitals welcome first babies of the new year (cbs17.com) — Families across the Triangle — including at Raleigh’s WakeMed North — welcomed some of the very first babies of 2026 in local hospitals just after midnight. New arrivals in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Durham marked the New Year with proud parents, photos, and plenty of excitement for what’s ahead.
   

4. Snow in Raleigh: What January usually looks like (cbs17.com) — If you’re wondering about January snow in Raleigh, history says it’s possible but usually light, with some years seeing none at all. This explainer revisits the record-breaking January 2000 storm, outlines the weather patterns Raleigh needs for snow, and suggests watching CBS 17 forecasts when those ingredients line up.

Sister hopeful brother's 2000 murder in Chapel Hill on New Year's day will be solved (abc11.com) — A long-unsolved Chapel Hill murder with ties to a Raleigh New Year’s Eve party is getting renewed attention as the victim’s sister pleads for answers 26 years later. Michael Crosby, 20, left a Raleigh house party in 1999 and was found shot the next morning in Chapel Hill; his family hopes 2026 finally brings justice and urges anyone with information to contact police.
