📰 News we're reading

1. The NC National Guard's long history will be the focus of a new museum (heraldsun.com) — A new N.C. National Guard Museum is coming to Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, directly across from the N.C. Museum of Art, with construction expected to finish by the end of 2027. Backed by $12 million in state funding, the museum will replace a former agriculture lab and showcase Guard artifacts, a Moores Creek Bridge diorama, and interactive stories of local citizen-soldiers.

2. Raleigh's growing pains: As the city builds up, downtown residents push back (cbs17.com) — Downtown Raleigh neighbors are suing the city over a Glenwood South rezoning that would allow two 27-story towers near Smoky Hollow, arguing officials ignored rules and neighborhood concerns. City planners defend the decision as vital to meeting housing demand while preserving historic character. A judge has not yet ruled, so the high-rise project can still move forward for now.

3. Shop Local Raleigh controversy also sparks debate about privacy rights (abc11.com) — A growing online petition is pressuring Shop Local Raleigh’s executive director after an anonymous Facebook comment about transgender children was linked to her, prompting board review and concern among member businesses. The situation is also raising broader questions in Raleigh about free speech, online anonymity, and the lack of clear North Carolina privacy protections.

4. Audit of NC Education Lottery shows decrease of millions in funding to public schools (abc11.com) — State Auditor Dave Boliek, speaking from Raleigh, has launched a rare performance audit of the NC Education Lottery after revenues jumped by $1.2 billion while school funding dropped by $20 million. The review will probe why growing sales, especially digital games, aren’t translating into more money for North Carolina’s public schools, including those serving Raleigh families.

5. People's Champ Bass Distinguished For Community Uplift (caro.news) — A Southeast Raleigh church gathering and a Shaw University gala spotlighted organizer Marcus Bass for his work building Black political power across North Carolina. Raleigh leaders and institutions, including Raleigh Raised Development and families who helped integrate Raleigh’s public schools, were honored for their long-term impact on education, justice, and community uplift.
