Detroit Lakes celebrated a memorable ninth National Wreaths Across America Day with over 4,909 other locations participating nationwide and overseas.

What makes this unique is that Detroit Lakes is the only city in west central Minnesota to participate in this world-wide event.

Each year, since 2015, the Detroit Lakes, Becker County and White Earth Communities and Veterans Groups gather to honor our Veterans, National Guard, Reserve and Active-Duty Members and their Families as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day.

This year five events were held, including for the 1st time a wreath was placed at the World War I Memorial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

According to Dr. Tom Mortenson, also known as "the Colonel", "While the events held in Detroit Lakes are small in comparison to events in our National Cemeteries, they reflect the willingness of those in our community to honor those that defend our freedoms."
