📰 News we're reading

1. Fargo winter warming operation sees increased demand amid bitter cold (valleynewslive.com) — Fargo Cass Public Health’s winter warming operation at the Downtown Engagement Center is now serving about 70 unhoused adults each night, up from roughly 40 last year. Officials cite rising housing costs and limited resources as key drivers, and stress that the free overnight space is open daily from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. for anyone 18 and older without shelter.

2. Cass County leads North Dakota in flu cases as holiday gatherings approach (valleynewslive.com) — Fargo health providers are warning that Cass County now leads North Dakota in flu cases, with many infections hitting unvaccinated children and teens. As holiday gatherings ramp up, local clinicians urge residents to get vaccinated, stay home when sick, and recognize that antibiotics won’t help flu, which is spreading quickly in schools and daycares.

3. Walking on North Dakota interstates is legal despite safety risks, Highway Patrol says (valleynewslive.com) — Law enforcement in Fargo is reminding drivers and pedestrians that walking on interstate shoulders is legal in North Dakota, even after a recent fatal hit-and-run on I-94 near Valley City. Highway Patrol officials explain why the law exists, how rarely such crashes occur, and what safety steps both walkers and drivers should take.

4. Boys hockey roundup: Bennet Benson buries 4 in Sheyenne's shutout (inforum.com) — High school hockey fans in Fargo saw big performances Tuesday, with West Fargo Sheyenne blanking Fargo Shanley 6-0 behind four goals from Bennet Benson and a shutout by Cruz Fitzpatrick. Fargo Davies also exploded for five second-period goals to top Devils Lake 9-6, while Fargo North rallied past West Fargo 4-2 in East Region play.

5. December 23: Joining the Birdmen (prairiepublic.org) — Over a century ago, Fargo shut down its banks and stores so more than 12,000 residents could watch an early biplane flight at the fairgrounds. That spectacle helped inspire North Dakotan Clifford Prodger, whose adventurous aviation career spanned World War I test flights, massive experimental aircraft, and ultimately a fatal crash in 1920.
