April 9th is a special day for those who have served our Nation by answering the call to arms.

On this day, our Nation learned that Robert E. Lee surrendered his forces to Union General (and future Republican President) Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. This event marked the beginning of the end of the Civil War – but many would be surprised to learn that it took more than 16 months before President Johnson declared the war legally over.

This day also marked the German invasion of neutral Denmark and Norway in 1940 and in 1942 it was the day American and Filipino defenders surrendered to the Japanese.

Closer to the present time, it was on this day that just three weeks into the invasion of Iraq, U.S. forces and Iraqis pulled down the statue of Saddam Hussein symbolizing the end of the Iraqi War.

That was twenty-one years ago when the United States and our Allies defeated Saddam. Don’t you think it’s time that we express our gratitude to the men and women who fought in OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM?

Where are the memorials for those who served and died in this war?

Look around and ask yourself why there isn’t one in your community.

We are a nation that forgets the sacrifices of war – over and over again, and we fail to pay tribute – ask a Korean War or Viet War Vet or their loved ones. Are we about to forget another generation of warriors?

My answer is NO!

We owe them all our love and respect, and we need to remind future generations of the cost of freedom.

As President Lincoln said, it is up to us “to care … who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan.

Isn’t it time we put aside partisan politics and honor them in each community?

Ask your elected officials why there isn't a memorial for them in your community!
