Avon Bicentennial Logo Winner Selected

Avon Recreation Director Dian Corrao said the contest was announced at the Bicentennial Committee’s initial meeting in April

“We voted on it at our last meeting,” Corrao said at the June 3 City Council meeting. “Avon resident David Kudla’s design was selected.”

Ohio, which was founded in 1814, will celebrate its bicentennial year in 2014.

In his submission, Kudla said the logo contains the red, white and blue colors of the country as well as the purple and gold colors of our city and schools.

The seven stars at the top represent the original Township Number 7 in Range 16 of the Western Reserve, where Avon is located.

The background represents the nation’s flag and there are 13 red and white stripes at the bottom of the logo which represent America's 13 original colonies. The star represents the city’s location in Ohio.

The eagle which is soaring through the “O” in Avon represents the bald eagle, the nation’s bird, as well as the Avon Eagle, the city school district’s mascot.

“This is what we’ll be using for banners going down Detroit (Road), as well as T-shirts and bags,” Corrao said.

She said the city will not be hosting one large bicentennial event.

“We’ll be planning different events throughout the year,” Corrao said. “There won’t be one big celebration, but instead activities every other month.”

The next meeting of the Bicentennial Committee is June 25 at 7 p.m. at Avon Isle on Detroit Road.
