The Avon Lake Lacrosse Club, which is in its fourth season of lacrosse had advanced to the state quarter finals.
On May 25, Avon Lake beat Marysville in the second round of the OHSLA state tournament, 12-6, advancing to the quarter-finals of the state tournament for high school club teams later this week against St. Thomas Aquinas (Louisville).
The team finished the regular season with a 10-5 record and beat Marysville in the first round off the state playoffs on Saturday by a score of 12-6. The win included three goals and two assists by Shoremen Trent Glasser. Avon Lake plays in the quarterfinals of the state tournament this weekend.
“The Avon Lake Lacrosse Club is wrapping up its most successful season ever,” club founder Brian Lamb said. “We are starting to develop talented lacrosse players who intend to continue their lacrosse careers in college,” he said.
Three senior girls have signed letters of intent to play women’s lacrosse in college: McKenzie Bueck (Albion College); Hayley Burke (Ursuline College); and Emily Pechaitis (Baldwin-Wallace University) have made commitments as has senior Devon Henry who has signed a letter of intent to play men’s lacrosse at Baldwin-Wallace. Elliot Smith intends to try out for the University of Alabama’s club lacrosse team.
“One of our goals this year was to launch a middle school lacrosse program for 7th and 8th grade boys,” Lamb said. “We met this goal with flying colors. We had fourteen players start our middle school team on a snow-covered field in February. Many of them had never played any organized lacrosse before. The highlight of the middle school team’s inaugural season was winning two out of three games at a statewide lacrosse festival in Medina at the mid-point of the season. With the successful launch of our boys middle school team, the pipeline of lacrosse talent for the boys high school team is now officially open.”
Next season the Club hopes to continue to grow the feeder program by adding 5th-6th grade boys lacrosse, and possibly a girls middle school team, if suitable coaching is found.
“We believe the demand is there – it’s really a question of finding adults willing/able to coach lacrosse, a sport that not many adults in the area have ever played or coached,” Lamb said.
“The Avon Lake Lacrosse Club is fortunate to have outstanding coaching at all levels of the program, so we are confident we will attract additional coaching talent.”
The team is coached by Kevin Walz and Patrick Durkin.
