Cars Stolen In Avon Lake, Police Urge Precautions For Residents

Two vehicles were stolen from outside homes in Avon Lake this week. Police have simple steps to prevent also becoming a victim.

AVON LAKE, OH — Two cars were stolen from outside homes in Avon Lake on early Wednesday, police announced.

At least one of the stolen cars was left unlocked overnight, with the keys inside the car, according to Avon Lake Police reports. The thefts occurred at homes on Chatham Drive and Aqua Marine Boulevard.

The stolen vehicles were a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe and a 2017 Nissan Murano.

Avon Lake police recently asked residents to develop a "9 p.m. routine" that includes ensuring their vehicles are properly locked overnight. The routine should include:

  • Taking valuables out of cars and into homes.
  • Locking all vehicles.
  • Locking the house.
  • Turning on an outside light.

"These simple steps can help prevent you from becoming a victim of property crimes. Thieves like an easy target - don't be one. Start making the 9 p.m. routine a habit," police said on social media.

Other recent incidents in Avon Lake

Traffic complaint, Jan. 31 — Police stopped a car on Moore Road. The driver had a suspended license and was cited by police.

Disorderly conduct, Jan. 30 — A 19-year-old became agitated while riding in an Uber. The driver believed he was intoxicated and contacted police. The driver stopped the car and waited for officers to arrive. Police then removed the 19-year-old from the car and turned him over to his parents.

Fraud, Jan. 26 — Three checks were fraudulently cashed using an Avon Lake resident's account, police said.

Traffic complaint, Jan. 28 — Police stopped a car on Avon Belden Road after seeing its temporary tag was not clearly displayed. The driver had a suspended license and was cited for both offenses.
