As we turn to a new year, many people are looking for ways to improve their way of life. For seniors, this often includes trying to increase general health and well-being. While physical health is a huge concern for aging Americans, mental and brain health should also be considered.

Studies show 10% of people aged 65 or older have some form of dementia while more than 22% have a mild cognitive impairment.

Carebuilders at Home, a national senior care franchise with a location right here in Cincinnati, is hoping to help combat this growing issue.

“I believe it can be a mindset,” said Angie Kestler, Executive Director of CareBuilders at Home Cincinnati. “Because a senior isn’t always able to run a mile anymore or hit the weights, it’s easy to overlook and assume that portion of life is over.”

That’s why CareBuilders at Home has recently launched its Brain and Body Builder program. According to a press release sent by the company, the program is a cutting-edge approach to mental and physical wellness. CareBuilders caregivers will support clients with physical exercise and metal stimulation.

“It is an opportunity to build into the client even more than what our caregivers normally do, said Kestler. “I believe it invigorates the clients and gives them a push to go to the next level even when it’s in a limited capacity.”

The program includes physical tasks like chair yoga, resistance band work, and walking, while also integrating cognitive activities like puzzles, chess, checkers, and word games.

“I have one client in particular who is very excited about this,” Kestler said. “He just received a pacemaker and is currently on dialysis with limited mobility. When I did the initial intake with him, he said he needs to get his legs moving better.”

CareBuilders at Home is hoping to attract more clients who are looking for this kind of care. With the country’s elderly population growing a rapid pace, this is the kind of program that could truly help increase the quality of life for more people.

“I believe anyone willing is a good candidate,” said Kestler. “It gives them something to look forward to. Some clients don’t have a lot of motivation. This provides some.”
