COVID-19 Vaccination Required For Transplants At CLE Hospitals

Organ donors and recipients must now be vaccinated against COVID-19 at the Cleveland Clinic or University Hospitals.

CLEVELAND — Two of Ohio's largest hospital systems are now requiring organ donors and recipients to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Both the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals will now mandate all parties involved in an organ transplant be vaccinated prior to the procedure, according to News 5. The policy is being put in place to protect patients, the Cleveland Clinic said.

Vaccination is particularly important for patients undergoing an organ transplant, the Cleveland Clinic said, because medications taken post-surgery will weaken a patient's immune system response to provide the best conditions for the body accepting the new organ.
