📰 News we're reading

1. Judge temporarily blocks Ohio from using $600M in unclaimed funds for Browns stadium (fox8.com) — A state judge has temporarily stopped Ohio from shifting $600 million in unclaimed funds toward a new Cleveland Browns stadium, putting the controversial financing plan on hold until at least Jan. 8. The lawsuit argues the move violates constitutional protections and could irreversibly divert money that belongs to Ohioans, while state leaders had earmarked the funds as part of a broader cultural and sports facilities budget.

2. 15-year-old girl shot while walking in Cleveland (cleveland19.com) — A 15-year-old girl was shot while walking on Arlington Avenue on Cleveland’s East Side Monday afternoon, but she’s now in stable condition at the hospital. Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert near Arlington and East 130th, later determining the teen was wounded while walking there after initially reporting she’d been shot in East Cleveland.

3. Ohio State Highway Patrol urges holiday drivers to stay safe, looks to recruit new troopers (wkyc.com) — Cleveland-area state troopers have already handled 75 fatal crashes this year, and they’re urging local drivers to slow down, stay sober, and move over for flashing lights during the busy holiday travel rush. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is also actively recruiting new troopers, offering paid academy training, placement within 50 miles of home, and full benefits.

4. This new Tremont public art challenges first impressions (news5cleveland.com) — A new bronze statue outside St. Augustine Catholic Church in Tremont is giving Clevelanders a powerful reminder not to judge people at first glance. The two-sided artwork, by sculptor Timothy Schmalz, looks like a homeless person from one angle and an angel from the other, underscoring the parish’s long-standing mission of serving people on the margins and sparking year-round reflection on compassion.

5. Scientists Reverse Alzheimer's Symptoms in Mice (ntd.com) — Cleveland researchers at University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve, and the Louis Stokes VA have reversed Alzheimer’s-like brain damage and memory loss in mice by restoring a key energy molecule in the brain. Their experimental drug, P7C3-A20, normalized disease biomarkers and behavior, offering hope for future human treatments while experts stress that over-the-counter NAD+ supplements may be unsafe.
