Hospital Safety Grades: How Did Cleveland Area Hospitals Fare?
The Leapfrog Group announced its ratings Monday, which give hospitals a grade of "A" through "F" for patient safety.

CLEVELAND, OH — Hate going to the hospital? Well, you can feel a little bit better about it if you’re laid up in one of these ten Cleveland-area institutions.
All ten received A’s from an independent, national not-for-profit that grades hospitals.
The Leapfrog Group, along with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, evaluated the hospitals on the basis of numerous criteria and consolidated the results into a single letter grade for each.

The national Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades for more than 2,500 hospitals are available at the safety score website.
The site says choosing the right hospital can reduce your risk of avoidable death by 50 percent.
“The analysis finds that despite considerable improvement in the safety of hospital care since the Score’s launch in 2012, avoidable deaths remain high,” the site said. “Findings point to a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death in B hospitals, 35 percent higher in C hospitals, and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals, than in A hospitals.”
Among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Illinois ranked 15th for hospital safety. Forty five of Illinois’ 113 grade-eligible hospitals received A grades, putting it at 39.8 percent. Hawaii had the highest percentage of A-grade hospitals. Two-thirds of its 12 hospitals received A’s. No qualifying hospitals in Alaska, Delaware, the District of Columbia and North Dakota received an A.
