Here are the top three stories in Cleveland today:
- The City of East Cleveland will be getting money from the U.S. Justice Department to hire additional law enforcement officers. The funding is through the department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services COPS Hiring Program. The city will be able to hire three new officers with the $375,000 grant. (WKYC.com)
- A federal judge has ruled that the City of Cleveland will remain under a consent decree for another two years. The judge declined the city's request due to a lack of substantial and effective compliance. The consent decree was issued due to the U.S. Justice Department determining that the Cleveland Police Department had a pattern of excessive use of force. The reform order required the department to make significant policy changes. (Spectrum News 1)
- The City of Cleveland is actively investing in technology that detects gunfire. The data is sent to the police before anyone can make a 911 call. The technology is meant to improve the Cleveland Police Department's response time. The city plans to expand the program to 13 square miles around the city. (Cleveland 19)
