OH Winter Storm Effects Linger: Slippery Roads, Poor Visibility

A winter weather advisory is in place for most of northern Ohio through noon on Friday.

CLEVELAND — The lingering effects of a winter storm will make driving dangerous on Friday morning and early afternoon, the National Weather Service warned.

A light snowfall is expected to continue through the morning, though less than an inch of snow is expected to accumulate, according to forecasts. However, strong winds are causing blowing and drifting snow, making roads more hazardous and reducing visibility.

"Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute," the National Weather Service said. On Twitter, the agency added that road conditions are "highly variable" and "remain treacherous" in some communities.

Temperatures will also plummet Friday, with a projected high of 19 degrees and an overnight low of 6 degrees. That will create more ice on roadways and sidewalks and create additional hazards for travelers.

Taking Stock of the Storm

It's difficult to determine how much snow fell between Wednesday night and Friday morning because of the powerful winds that accompanied the winter storm. Gusts hit 30 or 35 mph in some areas, the National Weather Service said.

Getting accurate snowfall measurements has been "challenging," the agency said on Twitter.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said it has more than 1,000 trucks out Friday morning clearing snow and treating roads for ice. The department urged Ohioans to "stay home if they can" and allow plows to do their work.

"If you can't [stay home], allow yourself a lot of extra travel time," the department said on Twitter.

Looking Forward

Current forecasts show a gradual warm-up in northern Ohio, with little chance of additional snowfall over the weekend. Here's a forecast to plan your weekend:

Sunday — Sunny, with a high of 34 and an overnight low of 19.

Monday — Mostly cloudy, with a high of 33 and an overnight low of 16.
