📰 News we're reading

1. DiGeronimo Chosen to Lead Downtown Cleveland Lakefront Redevelopment (clevelandmagazine.com) — Cleveland has picked DiGeronimo Development to lead a massive overhaul of 50 acres on the downtown lakefront around the current Browns stadium site. Backed by settlement money and grants, the project aims to add mixed-income housing, public waterfront spaces, and new entertainment venues, with community input shaping a detailed master plan expected in 2026.

2. A dozen people remain at Cleveland cemetery encampment after surviving several brutal weeks (cleveland19.com) — A small group of unhoused residents is still living in tents at Scranton Cemetery in Cleveland after enduring the season’s coldest weeks, relying heavily on nearby neighbors and churches. City officials say most former encampment residents now have temporary housing through Cuyahoga County’s Office of Homeless Services, but those remaining describe a slow process and harsh overnight conditions while they wait for longer-term solutions.

3. Who paid for an ad pushing Cleveland schools consolidation? It's a mystery (news5cleveland.com) — Cleveland families are being urged to accept a major school consolidation plan through a new ad campaign funded by undisclosed “dark money” donors. The spot features Mayor Justin Bibb backing closures and mergers across the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, even as parents and watchdogs demand transparency about who’s paying to promote a plan that will close 18 buildings, merge 29 schools, and reportedly save $30 million.

4. Cleveland councilmembers call for review of bail process after fatal RTA Puritas Rapid Station shooting (wkyc.com) — Cleveland City Councilmembers are demanding a review of how a man with a long criminal record was free on reduced bond before a deadly shooting at the RTA Puritas Rapid Station on West 150th Street. They’re questioning recent bond decisions and the role of a nonprofit bail fund, arguing the system’s handling of repeat offenders may be putting transit riders at risk.

5. Semi-truck rips down power lines in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood for 4th time since July (cleveland19.com) — Repeated incidents of semi-trucks snagging low-hanging communication wires at West 25th Street and Bridge Avenue in Ohio City have residents and business owners worried about safety. After at least four wire strikes since July, including one Thursday morning, the city of Cleveland says it is now looking into why the lines remain so low and temporarily secured with rope.
