Lawnfield, Library Continue Civil War Series With Battle Of Antietam
The park and library will discuss the single bloodiest day of combat in American history

and will continue their series of lunchtime talks on the major battles of the Civil War with "The Battle of Antietam" at noon Wednesday.
The battle of Antietam (also known as Sharpsburg) is important for many reasons.
Firstly, it remains the single bloodiest day of combat in American history.

More than 22,000 Union and Confederate soldiers became casualties -- they were killed, wounded, captured or missing) during this one-day battle.
Furthermore, the results at Antietam led to the end of the Confederacy’s first attempted invasion of the North and gave President Abraham Lincoln the political capital he needed to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

Volunteers and staff from the park will lead the discussion.
Guests may bring a lunch to enjoy during the talk.
The monthly Civil War series will continue Oct. 10 with a program that focuses on the battle of Perryville.
The library and park's joint series coincides with the park's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
