Man Accused Of Scuffling With Security Guard While Trying To Shoplift

A man was charged with robbery after he scuffled with a security guard while trying to shoplift Monday afternoon from the Old Navy in Mentor, police said.

Greg Malenda, 35, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, walked into the clothing store at about 5 p.m. He then stashed a hooded sweatshirt and some T-shirts in a bag and tried to leave, Mentor Police Lt. Ken Zbiegien said.

However, a security guard stopped him and tried to escort him back to the store's office.

Instead of cooperating, Malenda tried to run but the security guard blocked his path, Zbiegien said.

The two got in a shoving match and Malenda pushed the guard to the ground, Zbiegien said.

But the guard was able to get back up, bearhug Malenda and carry him back to the office.

The police then came to the store and arrested Malenda.

Malenda was arraigned on a robbery charge Tuesday morning in .

Judge John Trebets set his bond at $50,000, which was not posted.

Malenda's next court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4.
